New Portfolio piece and Behind the Scenes
Ok, here’s a breakdown of the photo below and how it came to be.

1. Idea: I got the idea of kids flying kites and that the worst thing that could happen when you fly a kite is getting your kite stuck in a tree. I then had the idea of the dismay and confusion if your kite was to get stuck in a cloud passing by rather than in a tree.
2. Talent/Model: I asked around on facebook from a few friends that shoot portrait/lifestyle on anyone that would have a younger nephew/cousin that would fit the age group of about 7-11 years old. Thanks to Amanda Singer (click that link people!), a wedding/portrait photographer here at school, she said her cousin would be a willing and helpful model. She also did a great service by asking his mother and getting everything arranged too!
2. Location scouting:
I wanted the location to be in an area that was a bit of suburbia but also fit in with a place that kids would fly kites. I went to the area’s around where our model would be living and found this place, a neighborhood just down the road and less than 5 miles away! I put my camera on a tripod and shot the photo below so that I could send it to Amanda and put together a layout of what I had in mind.

3. Shooting: My good friend Sean Berry (<——check him out too!) came out to help out with the shoot. We used a medium octobox for a bit of fillĀ with it being fairly contrasty on a clear afternoon at about 4:00. I wanted to keep the lighting pretty minimal and have it still look like a sunny afternoon with bright colors and contrast. The shot below is the original shot, no retouching and minimal processing out of lightroom.

Having Fun:

Post Processing: This shot was a combination of multiple photos (probably around 3-4) after everything was blended in. The cloud was shot in studio, The kite out at the shoot. Besides that, it was blending another frame into the picture above to remove sean, changing the sky out to a solid gradient of blue, and then working with local contrast and color changes.
